Welcome to Jill Walton Therapeutic Counsellor

A confidential space to explore the thoughts, feelings and challenges in your life

Hello and welcome

I always knew I’d be a counsellor; I just took the scenic route to get there. I qualified in 2014 in my early 50s and have been successfully counselling in private practice for over 10 years. I love my job!

No experience is ever wasted. Who would’ve thought I’d develop so many useful transferable skills in the Customer Service and Business Advisor roles I had before counselling? What an invaluable insight into the demands, pressures and stresses facing schools, colleges, businesses, and the public. This has undoubtedly served me so well in my counselling practice.

This counsellor is very human too; I won’t pretend my life is perfect. Whose is? Like many, I’ve had my fair share of ups and downs. I’ve been in the client’s chair too. I know what it’s like to be so scared I nearly did a runner and didn’t turn up. It’s not easy, is it? I do understand. My job is to make this process easier for you.

I'm married to Nigel and a devoted dog mum to Jinny. The pair of them sometimes drive me mad with their quirky ways, but they do make me laugh and keep me grounded. It’s good to laugh.

Away from counselling, I love walking and being in nature with Jinny. Nothing beats an early morning walk (Nigel may disagree) with all the sounds, colours and smells. My idea of heaven is walking on the North Yorkshire Moors enjoying the wonderful scenery followed by tea and cake! Simple pleasures, but they deliver huge rewards. I’ve recently taken up practising yoga and I’m a real convert. I'm finding more and more that I enjoy a simpler, healthier, more reflective way of life while appreciating and valuing the connection with others.

How can counselling help?

Life sometimes throws some very difficult "stuff" at us. We often don't feel like bothering friends or family, so we pretend that everything is okay rather than feel unheard or misunderstood. Do you ever want to scream…..but I’m NOT okay!?

I help adults (yes, just like YOU) to:

  • Express your feelings & ask for what you need.
  • Be more assertive. Learn to say no & feel okay with this.
  • Feel less anxious, stressed, sad or depressed.
  • Improve your sleep. I’m grumpy when I don’t sleep. What about you?
  • Let go of anger, guilt & shame, or things you can't control.
  • Improve your confidence & self-esteem.
  • Improve your relationship with others.
  • Find more balanced ways of thinking. Lessen over-thinking.
  • Learn more effective coping strategies. Be more resilient.
  • Gain a fresh perspective.

I know… it’s so hard asking for help. It takes real courage, so well done for getting this far. Let me help you lighten your load and learn to let go of the things that may be holding you back. I'll help you find your own solutions so you can feel happier moving forward!

Don't stay stuck; I’d like to help.

Grief & Loss

You could say I was born into this work. In French, raison d'etre literally means “reason for being” – mine was because of a death. It is unlikely I would’ve been born without the death of my two-day old sister 14 months before.

Online Therapy

Online therapy (particularly since Covid19 when we all became more familiar with communicating via digital technology) has become increasingly popular.

Why choose me?

Trying to find the right counsellor can feel overwhelming, so let's make things easier for you. I won’t bombard you with too much information. I hope that’s okay.

Friendly ✓

My clients tell me I'm very down to earth and easy to talk to.

Why not find out for yourself - I offer a free 30-minute telephone call to prospective clients so you can see whether you feel comfortable talking to me. It’s your choice, if you’d prefer not to that’s okay.

Qualified & Experienced ✓

I qualified in 2014 (Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling) and have valued working with clients from all walks of life for over 10 years in Private Practice. I have also volunteered for the YMCA, St Barnabas Hospice, Cruse, and Citizens Advice. I am a Grief & Loss specialist, but I do counsel in other areas too.

Accredited ✓

I’m an Accredited Member of NCPS and I’m on the Accredited Register of The Professional Standards Authority. I’m regularly checked to make sure I am safe and competent to counsel you.

If you’re interested, I’m an Integrative counsellor who works from a mainly Humanistic perspective. But that’s enough counsellor talk. What does it mean for you? Well, the good news is that I have many therapeutic tools which I can personalise to meet your individual needs. It’s not a one size fits all. We’re in this together.

Counselling is all about YOU. I won’t pretend it will be easy, but it can be an amazing journey of exploration, self-discovery and healing.

I will be with you all the way.
